Speaker:

John McCormack

“Sustainable Living” in master planned communities?

Abstract

John McCormack has been undertaking the UK component of an international research project, funded by Lafarge Tarmac, looking at the (mis-)match between the sustainable living intentions of master planners in new-build housing schemes and the day-to-day practices of the people who ultimately live in these schemes.

Drawing upon three case studies – Wixams in Bedfordshire, One Brighton in Sussex, and Grand Union Village in Northolt – John will present interim findings from his research, based on data gleaned through document analysis, semi-structured interviews with residents, and visual ethnography.

This presentation will discuss a range of emerging issues in the sustainable living debate, including agency, governance, consciousness, mixed tenure, and expectations.
