Launch Symposium for The Hertfordshire Guide to Growth 2021 – Five Years On

What its about

The Centre for Sustainable Communities at the University of Hertfordshire is holding a one-day research symposium on the 23rd October 2014 at Hatfield House (further details below) to launch our recently completed research, The Hertfordshire Guide to Growth – Five Years On. The research reviews where we have come from in development, planning, urban design and community engagement terms, in the more than five years since the original Hertfordshire Guide to Growth was published

Symposium topics

With the recent release of local plan updates within the county, the research symposium offers a unique and timely opportunity for in depth discussion with a range of expert speakers and interested participants on design and planning ideas and good practice on the ground from Hertfordshire and elsewhere in the UK. Keynote speakers and facilitated panel sessions will consider:

  • Setting the scene - why ‘placemaking’ matters
  • Main findings from The Guide to Growth - Five Years On research
  • Planning and design issues that growth must address
  • Building new places – learning from England and Scotland
  • Lessons from the past – challenges for the future

We had some great speakers, including:

  • Richard Beazley, Chair of Governors, University of Hertfordshire
  • John Lewis, CEO, Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation
  • James Hulme, Strategic Policy Adviser, The House Builders Association (HBA)
  • Adrian Hames, Technical Director, WSP Group
  • Matthew Bradbury, Director of Operations, The Land Trust
  • Earl of Southesk, Elsick Development Company
  • Earl of Aboyne, AJC Scotland Limited
  • Paul Roberts, Founder and Executive Director, Turnberry Consulting
